Meglio o peggio? 🇮🇹🇬🇧

Una domanda che mi capita di leggere spesso e se Cuba oggi sia messa o meno peggio rispetto al periodo especial.
Faccio una doverosa premessa, oggi un po' la conosco ma io nel periodo especial non frequentavo Cuba.
Il mio primo viaggio e' stato nel dicembre del 2000, celebro i 25 anni di Cuba nella mia vita, ma del periodo especial ho sempre e solo sentito dire.
Quindi quando parlo di chupamiao, condom sciolti nella pizza al posto del formaggio e cose simili lo faccio per sentito dire.

Pero' conosco molti cubani, in primis la mia famiglia di riferimento, che c'erano e possono raccontarmelo quel periodo.
Questa crisi e' arrivata nel 2018, aggravata dalla pandemia e non e' rientrata dopo la fine del covid.
Aggiungerei la sciagurata unificazione monetaria fatta nel peggior momento possibile, appunto in piena pandemia.
Un dato catastrofico e' che l'inflazione fra il 2021 ed il 2023 ha superato il 500%.
Neanche in Germania dopo la Grande Guerra si era visto qualcosa di simile.

Ci vogliono due pensioni base per acquistare un cartone di uova, un kg di carne costa, maomeno, come un salario mensile.
La merce e' sparita dai negozi in cuc e la si ritrova su Revolico o nel fiorente mercato nero.
La situazione apagones la conosciamo, se non arriva un barco di petrolio donato da qualcuno si resta al buio.
A pelle posso dire che 10 anni fa gli apagones c'erano ma quando finivano tutto il barrio applaudiva, oggi la rabbia rischia di montare.
Allora non c'era internet che amplificava ogni cosa, volete che la gente scenda davvero in piazza a fare casino?
Togliete loro la connessione.

Quindi?
Come scrive Carlo su Cuba Facile durante il periodo especial era complicato trovare da mangiare, anche col soldo in tasca, oggi questo non accade.
Il cibo e' caro ma c'e'.
Giravano molti, molti, molti meno soldi.
Oggi esistono differenti classi sociali rispetto al 1991 dove piu' o meno erano tutti nello stesso guano, oggi chi ha possibilita' si compera un generatore, trova la gasolina aumma aumma e degli apagones se ne impippa.
Gli altri invece combattono coi mosquitos e questo fa incazzare non poco la gente.

Si sperava che il turismo togliesse le castagne dal fuoco mentre oggi si e' consapevoli che sara difficile invertire la tendenza al negativo che regola quel settore.
Concludendo non saprei dirvi....allora c'era Fidel, un leader, una guida, per molti un padre, per alcuni il solo padre, oggi ci sono Diaz Canel e Marrero...non e' esattamente la stessa cosa, ahime'.

Quindi sicuramente se hai un po' di plata oggi la sfanghi tranquillamente cosa che, forse, era piu' complicata nel periodo especial dove la gente comunque continuava a credere in qualcosa in qualcuno, mentre oggi sembra che non creda piu' in nulla e in nessuno.

BETTER OR WORSE?

A question that I often read is whether Cuba is worse off today or not compared to the especial period.
I must make a necessary premise, today I know it a little but I didn't frequent Cuba in the especial period.
My first trip was in December 2000, I celebrate 25 years of Cuba in my life, but I have always and only heard about the especial period.
So when I talk about chupamiao, condoms melted in pizza instead of cheese and similar things I do it by hearsay.

However, I know many Cubans, first of all my reference family, who were there and can tell me about that period.
This crisis arrived in 2018, aggravated by the pandemic and did not go away after the end of covid.
I would add the unfortunate monetary unification done at the worst possible time, precisely in the midst of the pandemic.
A catastrophic fact is that inflation between 2021 and 2023 has exceeded 500%.
Not even in Germany after the Great War had we seen anything similar.

It takes two basic pensions to buy a carton of eggs, a kg of meat costs, oh well, as much as a monthly salary.
The goods have disappeared from the shops in cuc and can be found on Revolico or in the thriving black market.
We know the apagones situation, if a boatload of oil donated by someone doesn't arrive, you're left in the dark.
I can say that 10 years ago the apagones were there but when they ran out the whole neighborhood applauded, today the anger risks mounting.
Back then there was no internet that amplified everything, do you really want people to take to the streets to make a mess?
Take away their connection.

So?
As Carlo writes on Cuba Facile during the especial period it was difficult to find food, even with money in your pocket, today this does not happen.
Food is expensive but it is there.
Much, much, much less money was around.
Today there are different social classes compared to 1991 where more or less everyone was in the same mess, today those who have the means buy a generator, find gasoline aumma aumma and don't give a damn about the apagones.
The others instead fight with mosquitos and this pisses people off quite a bit.

It was hoped that tourism would take the chestnuts out of the fire while today we are aware that it will be difficult to reverse the negative trend that governs that sector.
In conclusion I couldn't tell you... back then there was Fidel, a leader, a guide, for many a father, for some the only father, today there are Diaz Canel and Marrero... it's not exactly the same thing, alas.

So surely if you have a little bit of silver today you can get by easily, something that, perhaps, was more complicated in the special period where people continued to believe in something or someone, while today it seems that they no longer believe in anything or anyone.
