La lavanda dentata, conosciuta scientificamente come Lavandula dentata, è una specie di lavanda appartenente alla famiglia delle Lamiaceae. Originaria delle zone costiere del Mediterraneo occidentale e del Nord Africa, è apprezzata per il suo portamento compatto, la lunga fioritura e le foglie dal profumo intenso, rendendola una delle varietà più utilizzate.
Si presenta come un arbusto sempreverde di piccole dimensioni, con fusti legnosi alla base e ramificazioni erbacee. Le foglie, da cui prende il nome, sono di colore verde-grigiastro, strette, allungate e caratterizzate da margini finemente dentellati. Oltre alla forma decorativa, le foglie rilasciano un intenso aroma canforato se strofinate, tipico della lavanda.
La fioritura è lunga e spettacolare: i fiori sono piccoli, di colore viola o blu-lilla, e si sviluppano in spighe terminali, accompagnati da brattee violacee che ne esaltano l’aspetto. A differenza di altre lavande, la Lavandula dentata può fiorire più volte durante l’anno, soprattutto in climi miti, con una fioritura principale che si estende dalla primavera all’autunno. I fiori, ricchi di nettare, attirano api, farfalle e altri insetti impollinatori, rendendo questa pianta utile per favorire la biodiversità.
Dal punto di vista della coltivazione, la lavanda dentata è una pianta rustica, adatta a climi caldi e secchi. Predilige esposizioni soleggiate e terreni ben drenati, anche poveri o sassosi, purché non soggetti a ristagni idrici. Teme il gelo prolungato e per questo, nelle zone con inverni rigidi, è preferibile coltivarla in vaso o ripararla con un telo. Le irrigazioni devono essere moderate: è meglio lasciare asciugare il terreno tra un’annaffiatura e l’altra. Una potatura leggera dopo la fioritura aiuta a mantenere una forma compatta e favorisce nuove fioriture.
Oltre al suo utilizzo ornamentale, la lavanda dentata è impiegata anche in erboristeria e profumeria per l’estrazione di oli essenziali, sebbene meno pregiata rispetto ad altre specie come la Lavandula angustifolia. Le spighe fiorite possono essere essiccate e utilizzate in sacchetti profumati o composizioni floreali.

French lavender, scientifically known as Lavandula dentata, is a species of lavender belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Native to the coastal regions of the western Mediterranean and North Africa, it is valued for its compact growth habit, long-lasting flowering, and intensely fragrant foliage, making it one of the most widely used varieties.
It appears as a small evergreen shrub with woody stems at the base and herbaceous branches. The leaves, from which it gets its name, are grayish-green, narrow, elongated, and characterized by finely toothed edges. In addition to their decorative shape, the leaves release a strong camphor-like aroma when rubbed, typical of lavender.
The flowering is long and spectacular: the small flowers are violet or bluish-lilac and develop in terminal spikes, accompanied by purplish bracts that enhance their appearance. Unlike other lavenders, Lavandula dentata can bloom multiple times throughout the year, especially in mild climates, with a main bloom that lasts from spring to autumn. The flowers, rich in nectar, attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making this plant beneficial for promoting garden biodiversity.
From a cultivation standpoint, French lavender is a hardy plant well-suited to warm, dry climates. It prefers sunny locations and well-drained soils, even poor or rocky ones, as long as they are not prone to waterlogging. It does not tolerate prolonged frost, so in colder areas, it is best grown in pots or protected with a covering during winter. Watering should be moderate: it is better to let the soil dry out between waterings. A light pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact shape and encourages further blooming.
In addition to its ornamental use, Lavandula dentata is also employed in herbal medicine and perfumery for essential oil extraction, though it is considered less refined than other species like Lavandula angustifolia. The flowering spikes can be dried and used in scented sachets or floral arrangements.
