The Road

It was nice day for a drive. It all started out as a pretty ordinary day. We had some clouds, but also a lot of sun shine, and the clouds were nicely shaped. It was getting to be the end of summer, so off to the mountains and a maybe dinner I went. I pulled onto the road, and there was the normal back and forth end of summer approaching traffic. All pretty normal.

I can not say for sure when I saw my last car. I had just left behind the last town before the open road to the next one forty or so miles away. The last I remember was a larger red truck filling my rear view mirror, and a few oncoming vehicles. After the last opposite direction vehicle passed I glanced back in my rear view to see if I needed to find a place to pull over and let the angry seeming truck by.

Something did not seem right. There were no off shoot roads in the last couple of miles from when I saw that truck, He was no longer there, not only was he no longer there, but all the vehicles, well all five of them, were gone as well. I should have been able to see them still in the rear view mirror, I mean we were on the last straight flat stretch still before the climb into the mountains.

There was no smoke, no fires no pile up of cars nothing at all on the road behind me. it was like they all just disappeared from the road. As I was still doing the speed limit of fifty five, I could not let my attention wander to much so I continued looking ahead for that last before the climb into the mountains pullout. I was surprised that after that last batch of cars went by that there were no more coming my direction, that was pretty unusual. There was always traffic this time of year.

Finally the pullout came into view. no one was there, which was not unusual. I have stopped here many times to take photos and there is a nice tree to lean against and take care of mother nature away from prying eyes if need be. It was jokingly referred to as the pee tree. A little further down the small trail was a, well number 2 boulder. You did not have to worry about people sneaking up on you without making noise, never had to use it myself, but I was familiar with its location.

I walked out to the road after turning the car off. Mostly to stretch my legs, but to also look up and down the road. there had to be more traffic, people did not just disappear, well people did on occasion, but not whole cars and trucks. There was no place for them to pull off or turn onto another road. This was a 40 mile stretch of road with no other access points. There was a definite odd feeling in the air as I approached the road. I could feel more than hear a slight electrical hum as I approached the road.

Nothing, no one no cars as far as the eyes could see on this straight stretch of road, I had a good five miles visibility in either direction, nothing, just the empty road. the electrical feel was getting stronger, and I was now definitely hearing it. I glanced up at the sky to see if there was anything there that should not be there, just a case of heebie jeebies I guess, nothing in the sky except those cool looking clouds and nice deep blue sky. I shook my head and turned back toward my vehicle....It was gone! It had, like all those other cars, just disappeared.
