“Gold” in the trash

Yesterday, luck smiled on me in a very concrete way, because I came across a find that could easily be called gold, and not just figuratively, but in the world of electronics. Sometimes you walk past a pile of junk and don't even look, and sometimes a glance is enough to notice something that immediately makes your heart beat faster. There was an MSI Z170 A PRO motherboard with be quiet cooling, and inside was an Intel i5 6600 processor. At first, I thought it was probably dead and that's why someone threw it away, but my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to check it out. Upon closer inspection, it turned out that the external condition was surprisingly good, with a few layers of dust, some old thermal paste, and no signs of burning or mechanical damage. At this stage, you can already feel that it might be okay, because if the board is not broken and there are no visible short circuits, the chances of it working are high. I brought the equipment home, immediately took out the compressor and compressed air, and blew out all the sockets, ports, and heat sinks. Dust poured out like from a vacuum cleaner after several months without cleaning, but otherwise the electronics looked healthy. I replaced the paste on the processor, thoroughly cleaned the cooling system, and put everything back together to see what would happen. I connected the RAM I had on hand, added an old graphics card, and pressed the power button. What happened next was the best moment of the day, because the motherboard started up without any problems, the BIOS loaded elegantly, and the i5 6600 processor reported its presence. It gives you an incredible sense of satisfaction, because instead of another piece of electronic junk, you have a working set that can serve you for a long time to come.

I spent the whole evening playing with this set, testing the slots, checking the USB ports, SATA and PCIe sockets, and everything worked as it should. It's really impressive that someone threw away a complete and fully functional motherboard with a processor that still works well in everyday use. After all, an i5 6600 is still a solid unit that can easily handle the internet, multimedia, and even many games if you add the right graphics card. The very fact that it came into my hands for free is already a win, because on the secondary market, such a set easily costs several hundred zlotys. I can sell it and make a pure profit or keep it as an additional computer for my workshop, where something for testing always comes in handy. However, what makes me happiest is the knowledge that I saved a piece of electronics from being ground up into electronic waste. In a world where everyone is chasing after new equipment, where any drop in performance causes the entire set to be replaced, I am happy that something that others considered worthless works and gives me satisfaction. This is the moment when you feel that the time spent rummaging through old things pays off handsomely. I feel like I've won the lottery because I've found something that not only works but also gives me pleasure from repairing, cleaning, and the very fact that it has come back to life. And I'll tell you honestly that this feeling is better than buying new equipment from a store, because here, apart from owning it, you are aware that you have done something with your own hands and that thanks to you, another piece of equipment did not end up in a landfill.

Wczoraj los się do mnie uśmiechnął tak konkretnie, bo trafiłem na znalezisko które spokojnie można nazwać złotem i to nie w przenośni tylko w świecie elektroniki. Czasem tak jest że człowiek przechodzi obok sterty gratów i nawet nie patrzy a czasem wystarczy rzut oka żeby zauważyć coś co od razu powoduje przyspieszone bicie serca. Leżała sobie płyta główna MSI Z170 A PRO razem z chłodzeniem be quiet a w środku siedział procesor Intel i5 6600. Na początku pomyślałem że pewnie trup i dlatego ktoś to wywalił, ale ciekawość nie dawała mi spokoju i postanowiłem sprawdzić. Po bliższym obejrzeniu okazało się że stan zewnętrzny jest zaskakująco dobry, kilka warstw kurzu, trochę starej pasty termoprzewodzącej i zero śladów spalenizny czy mechanicznych uszkodzeń. Człowiek już na tym etapie czuje że może być dobrze, bo jeśli płyta nie jest połamana i nie ma widocznych zwarć to szanse na uruchomienie są spore. Przyniosłem sprzęt do domu, od razu wyciągnąłem kompresor i sprężone powietrze, przedmuchałem wszystkie gniazda, porty i radiatory. Kurz sypał się jak z odkurzacza po kilku miesiącach bez czyszczenia, ale poza tym elektronika wyglądała zdrowo. Wymieniłem pastę na procesorze, przeczyściłem dokładnie chłodzenie i poskładałem wszystko do kupy żeby sprawdzić co z tego będzie. Podłączyłem pamięci RAM które miałem pod ręką, dorzuciłem starą kartę graficzną i wcisnąłem power. To co się wydarzyło potem to była najlepsza chwila dnia, bo płyta ruszyła bez żadnego problemu, BIOS załadował się elegancko a procesor i5 6600 zameldował swoją obecność. Człowiek czuje wtedy niesamowitą satysfakcję, bo zamiast kolejnego kawałka elektrośmiecia ma przed sobą sprawny zestaw który jeszcze długo może posłużyć.

Cały wieczór spędziłem bawiąc się tym zestawem, testując sloty, sprawdzając porty USB, gniazda SATA i PCIe i wszystko działało jak należy. To naprawdę robi wrażenie że ktoś wyrzucił kompletną i w pełni sprawną płytę z procesorem który wciąż daje radę w codziennym użytkowaniu. Przecież taki i5 6600 to dalej solidna jednostka która bez problemu ogarnie internet, multimedia a nawet wiele gier jeśli dorzuci się odpowiednią kartę graficzną. Sam fakt że to trafiło w moje ręce za darmo to już jest wygrana, bo na rynku wtórnym taki komplet spokojnie kosztuje kilkaset złotych. Mogę to sprzedać i zgarnąć czysty zarobek albo zostawić sobie jako dodatkowy komputer do warsztatu, gdzie zawsze przydaje się coś do testów. Najbardziej jednak cieszy mnie świadomość że uratowałem kawałek elektroniki przed zmieleniem na elektrośmieci. W świecie gdzie wszyscy gonią za nowym sprzętem, gdzie byle spadek wydajności powoduje wymianę całego zestawu, ja mam z tego radochę że coś co inni uznali za bezwartościowe działa i daje satysfakcję. To jest właśnie ten moment kiedy czujesz że czas poświęcony na grzebanie w starych rzeczach opłaca się z nawiązką. Czuję się jakbym wygrał los na loterii bo znalazłem coś co nie tylko działa ale daje też frajdę z naprawy, czyszczenia i samego faktu że wróciło do życia. I powiem wam szczerze że to uczucie jest lepsze niż zakup nowego sprzętu ze sklepu, bo tutaj oprócz samego posiadania masz świadomość że zrobiłeś coś własnymi rękami i że dzięki tobie kolejny sprzęt nie skończył na wysypisku.
