Tell your story #55: Caveat Emptor (Let the buyer beware!)
I'd give the consumer protection agencies in my country a big wullnp!
For sometime now, I have been following the works of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). These are agencies established to protect the health and wellbeing of Nigerian citizens. They ban the sale, distribution, and advertisement of goods and services which do not comply with safety or health regulations. Ensuring that the products we consume are safe and high-quality.
However, despite their efforts to protect competitors and consumer rights, there are still loopholes that need to be filled. Which is why consumers must always be at alert, particularly in matters relating to our health.
Yesterday, I was searching for something in one of the rooms when I stumbled on this medication. I felt so excited to find it and decided to pocket it. It belongs to someone close to me. She has been taking it for close to a month now. Instinctively, I felt the urge to check its expiring date.
Checking the expiring dates of food items, drinks and medications is something I started doing after watching a documentary on the implication of consuming expired soda drink or products.
Lo and behold, this is what I found. A manufacturing date stating 24072024 and expiring date showing 27072023.
I immediately knew that there was fire on the mountain. I had to reach out to this close person to confirm where she purchased this medication from. Was it a trusted pharmacy or just a roadside patent medicine store, which for some reason is called a chemist?
I started worrying about what would happen to her. Would she fall sick? Will it affect her liver?
She has been consuming a product this whole time and it took a mere coincidence to discover it.
We took up the case and ensured that we got to the root of the matter. The pharmacist explained that it was authentic. The confusion aroused due to how the date was written. YYYYMMDD instead of DDMMYYYY orMMDDYYYY which are the standard British and American ways of writing dates.
We are still investigating this.
I have to raise this awareness to keep our minds alert on the prevalence of substandard medicines and foods around our corners. While the consumer protection agents are doing their job to keep us safe, we also have a huge role to play in safeguarding our health, including those of the kids and elderly around us.
✔️ To purchase medications from only reputable pharmacies.
✔ ️ To always check the production and expiring dates on every product that I buy.
✔️ To verify the authenticity of products at the point of sale.
✔️ And most importantly, report substandard or counterfeit products (which could be goods or services) to relevant authorities for immediate action.
I am optimistic that these issues will be tackled until the chances of having them occur reduces to the barest minimum.

This is outrageous!
Indeed, Emmabritt.
A bad risk that gives little respect to public health.
But you are striking a very serious point here, talking or consuming any substance without expired date is very dangerous and most times the effects can be disastrous.
I had a similar experience last month, my brother was hospitalized in the federal medical center and the nurse wrote a drugs for us to buy in the pharmacy so when my brother got there, they gave him something else unknown to him since his not his field, so the nurse was about to administer the drug when she realize that it not what prescribed.
I was very mad, I collected the receipt and the drugs went to the pharmacy and cause commotion saying that there are unprofessional in their job,so they pleased with me not to go extra mile because I was ready to Sue them 🤣🤣🤣🤣, just with my mouth.. OOOh 😆😆😆.
The quickly change the drugs for me even with the one that was damage, they pay severely for it.
These call for urgent attention when it has to do with our health.
Thanks for giving me the room to also share my own experience
Your experience takes my mind back to situations where people are sold medications they did not ask for.
I see this happen often that I make it a duty to check and crosscheck the name and gram of the prescribed medication.
It's annoying, to say the least.
I like how the FCCPC steps in when we report these cases. How they are able to hide during inspection marvels me. I wish that more and more people can report defaulters when caught.
It's well dear, our prayers should be the deeds should not be done in the life of our loves ones before realizing that it was not the right medication
This is it.
I might act like everything is fine but I am still traumatised by my aunt's demise. Can't even go deep to discuss the level of pain because it tears me up every single time.
Even now.
But we move. Now, we have to protect the ones around us from further excruciating pain.
That's just the way forward dear🤝🤝,
Have a blessed day 🥰😍😍.
¡Holaaa amiga!🤗
True.
The labels are not just there for fancy. They serve a purpose — to keep us informed.
There is need to be alert regarding things relating to our health because health is wealth.
There are so many adulterated products now in the market, expired products which are still sold and it's endangering out health and there's just little or no precaution measures by us the consumers.
I believe we can do more because death rate is high now especially amongst the young ones and one can't fathom what the cause is, let's all be guided!
Look out for expiry date and for adulterated products and stay away from them.
There are so many substandard products in the market.
Even when the health regulation agencies are doing their job, we still have them around.
Some services are below quality as well. Check hospitals, etc.
This is where the principle of caveat emptor comes in. Customers have to beware.
We have a responsibility to protect ourselves as well and report these cases when we find them.
Exactly sis but we can't be 100% cautious, we're only covered by grace.
