💭 Why We Overthink (And How I Try to Stop)
Hey Steemit! 👋
Today I want to share something that I often struggle with: overthinking.
Maybe you know that feeling too – your mind keeps replaying the same situation, imagining every possible (usually negative) outcome, and you can’t switch it off.
Overthinking can steal hours, days, even weeks from us. But why do we do it, and what can we do about it?
🌧 Why do we overthink?
For me, overthinking usually comes from:
Caring too much about what might happen or what others might think.
Fear of mistakes – the thought that one wrong step will ruin everything.
Trying to control the future – as if worrying more will somehow make things go perfectly.
In reality, none of this helps. But it feels like we’re “doing something” by worrying – and that illusion is hard to let go of.
🌱 What helps me break the cycle
Here are a few small things I do when I notice I’m lost in overthinking:
✅ Writing it all down – dumping every thought on paper or into my notes app. Once it’s outside my head, it often feels smaller and less powerful.
✅ Changing my environment – like going for a short walk, stretching, or even just stepping outside to get fresh air. Movement helps break the mental loop.
✅ Asking myself: “Will this matter in a week? In a month? In a year?”
Usually, the answer is no – and that perspective helps me let go.
✅ Reminding myself: “I can’t control everything – and that’s okay.”
Accepting uncertainty is scary, but it’s freeing too.
🔄 Learning to live with imperfection
I’m still learning that it’s okay not to have everything figured out.
It’s okay to make mistakes.
And it’s okay to take action even when I feel unsure – because waiting for “perfect certainty” often means waiting forever.
Overthinking never truly protects us from pain or failure – it just adds extra suffering before anything even happens.
🧩 Your turn!
Do you struggle with overthinking as well?
What helps you deal with it?
I’d love to hear your thoughts, stories, or even just a simple “me too” – so we know we’re not alone in this.
Thanks so much for reading! 🙏
