Beautiful Oman
A lot of people have still not heard about this Country, when I say Oman, they wonder which part of the world it is. It's a small country with a total population of just 5 million of which around 40% is expat population and the balance locals. In India, Mumbai city where my home is, there the population is 12.5 million, which is more than double of what whole of Oman's population is. With less population the quality of life is also better and Oman proves that. 10 years back when I had moved here, the expat population was more then 50% but in the last few years, there have been lot of initiatives of their ministry to reduce the expat population and increase the Omanization percentage. Even the work force previously we would find more expats in any company, but now with Omanization targets have been given to each company to maintain 70% to 80% local workforce. Which I find it fair enough because giving jobs to expat means depriving the locals of getting a job. With all of this lot of expats had to return back to their countries and the numbers have been going down.
During Covid times again there was a fall in the number of expats drastically, because expats chose to move back to their own countries and many lost their jobs. Given all of these conditions, sometimes taking up a job in any middle east country is like a gamble, because almost all of them are following same strategies. By the way I missed mentioning, Oman is UAE's neighbor, Dubai is a 5-hour drive from Muscat city which is the capital of Oman. It is a very good accessible road and personally I too prefer driving down to Dubai, which we do on and off.
Given all of this Oman is a complete contrast to all the other middle east countries. If you see Dubai, you will go crazy looking at the buildings, they are so tall that if you look up you will not know where it ends. Even Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia are expanding in similar ways. But Oman wants to maintain its rich heritage and culture. We do not have any building more then 10 floors. The ministry does not approve construction of tall buildings. Oman is surrounded by mountains and the Arabian sea coastline runs through the country. From any part of the city, you can see mountains or the coastline, no building blocks the views and this is the charm of the city. While living in urban areas you still are very close to the nature and it's all around you.
This is one of Oman's scenic point
Look at our roads, it's a pleasure driving on these roads.
