What if we would live forever
Today morning I was listening to a podcast of Neil deGrasse Tyson who is an astrophysicist. I like listening to him and some others in this field as they talk about space and those things. Today morning while talking about some of the science of the space world, he also made this short comment on life, about living on forever. He said, he would never want to live on forever because that would be a very complacent life. First when I heard him saying no, I thought to myself why would he say no to live forever. He can do so many things if he would live forever or lives for very long time. But the explanation he gave kind of hit me and it felt very logical to me. Many people wish that there was no death and here he was talking about death an absolute must.
Living forever means living without any timelines. These are some of the things that he mentioned and then some of the things that ran through my mind. It is correct that if we live forever there will be many days we may not get out of the bed and just laze out. We may not have any timeline goals, like completing studies, getting married, having children. Life would become very boring, we may not work for many days, thinking we have so much time at end. When something is available in excess or forever, we will lose it's importance and the same will happen for life as well. If we would know that we have time forever we will never value it.
We will stop being grateful about life, the blessings that we have, the people in our life, everything will be taken for granted and probably humanity will not progress as much as it is with timelines. With death people know they have a limited time and they want to accomplish so many things in this limited time, but with no limitations time will lose it's essence and majority of the people will be in lazy mode. Inventions and discoveries will be less and moving at a very slow speed. Quality of life will also not be good, because with limited resources and forever use, we will run out of all the natural resources that we have on our planet.
The idea of living forever looks very luring, but it may be the biggest disaster for humanity. We may have quantity but not quality. The number of people living in poverty will be much more than what it is now. There will never be enough and there could be more crimes, and violence also. I am also thinking that new souls will keep taking birth and if there is no death, probably we will reach to a state where there would be no place for us to live, and we may have to start living in ultra confined spaces. Also, I cannot imagine the pressure on the new souls coming to life, they would have a line of ancestors dictating them forever.
The only advantage that I would see with living forever is the exploration of space, if we use our brilliant minds on this then probably with the infinite time, we would be able to explore the infinite space as well. And then the only way to resolve the population problem would be through building space colonies where majority of the population will be transported.
In all I believe that the cycle of birth and death is perfectly orchestrated by the universe to keep the balance. So, for those who are in search of the life elixir and wanting to live forever or for a very long time, probably it would be the biggest disaster for humanity.
