another good trick i use (which usually works, if the plane isn´t super full): just wait until last call to board and try to be the last one to go on the plane. This way you´ll have an easy overview which rows are empty and can just pick one :) So far (knock on wood) no one has ever asked to check my ticket.
yes this works only if you dont have luggage. if you have luggage often the bins are full
