BENEFITS OF PLAYING THE LOTTERY
We really love the lottery here in Texas. I grew up in Michigan and found it odd that Texas would have a lottery since gamblers so often include Texas in their trail of nonbelief. But I remember my first day working at a local TV station in Austin way back in 1990 and commiserating about the gas prices with a couple of co-workers. When I asked them what bought them gas to drive the forty miles to and from work, one woman brightened up and said, "The lottery!" And suddenly I realized we do play the lottery.
Luckily, there's some good news to it. According to the National Endowment for Financial Education's 2012 "Financial Literacy Survey," 71 percent of respondents wished they made a better budget, and 27 percent said they required someone else to manage their personal finances. Twenty-six percent of those aged thirty and younger said they'd relied on their most recent tax refund to make ends meet, and 27 percent didn't have any kind of budget in place.
