The love of the holy spirit: As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. 2 John 1:6
John was the disciple most loved by Jesus, that is why one of the fundamental themes of this disciple in his writings was the theme of love, but not just any love, but the love that leads us to eternal life, the contemplative life, the worship of the Father in spirit and in truth, as the teacher Jesus explained to the Samaritan woman when he asked for water from a well (John 4:23).
But this love is the result of a grace from above and not the result of our efforts: "God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit", Romans 5:5. Not everyone has this perfect love, but those who have been rewarded from above. That is why the question is why this love is made a demand, an imperative, because in itself the desire, and love is that, a desire, is not something voluntary, like the dictates of reason.
And the answer is simple, when we enter the Kingdom of God the logic is always to ask for the most excellent and the best, and that is the love of God, the love projected towards all of God's creation. That's why the love of Jesus is a commandment, and in this love the good of our neighbor is as important as ours, and so our Lord Jesus said: "Love your neighbor as yourself" Mark 12:31.
Following the teachings of Jesus, the apostle John in his second letter emphasized the importance of the ethical love:
"It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love" 2 John 1:4-6.
