ارتباط داروهای پایین آورنده‌ی اسید معده با کمبود ویتامین B12
مطالعات نشان داده است که مصرف داروهای پایین آورنده‌ی اسید معده با سطح پایین‌تر ویتامین B12 در ارتباط است.
داروهای پایین آورنده‌ی اسید معده شامل مهار کننده‌های گیرنده‌ی H2 هیستامین مانند رانیتیدین و فاموتیدین و مسدود کننده‌های پمپ پروتونی مانند اومپرازول و پنتوپرازول هستند. مصرف بالا و مداوم این داروها با کمبود ویتامین B12 ارتباط دارد.
البته معنای این مطلب این نیست که مصرف این داروها قطعاً موجب کمبود ویتامین B12 و بروز کم‌خونی مگالوبلاستیک می‌شود. ولی لازم است که این داروها فقط به میزان لازم و به مدت درست مصرف شوند. در صورتی که درمان کوتاه‌مدت با این داروها مؤثر باشد، نباید به‌صورت مداوم مورد استفاده قرار گیرند.
یک مقاله‌ی مروری جدید، توصیه‌های مفید برای مصرف طولانی‌مدت داروهای مهار کننده‌ی پمپ پروتون را ذکر کرده است. در این مطالعه، انجام تست ویتامین B12 و یا مصرف بیش از حد نیاز ویتامین B12 در حین درمان طولانی‌مدت با مهار کننده‌های پمپ پروتون به‌صورت روتین توصیه نشده است.
