Nice work on the lathe!
Could you mill the flats completely by putting a washer between the piece and the faceplate where you have it clamped on with the bolts? Then you could set the mill to shave the edge without leaving the very thin edge on the piece.
I have an old wood lathe that also has a 3 jaw chuck, but it didn't have a motor when I got it. I still need to figure out how to drive it, the pulleys are enclosed in the case.
You could use some washers under the work, but they would have to be made in the shop. The washers at the hardware store are all different thicknesses. A piece of shim stock under the whole workpiece would be best.
