RE: A Geeky Dad's Movie Guide to Marry Poppins Returns (2018)

My family liked it also. It was really well done overall. The original Mary Poppins is a perfect kid story and movie, so that was a tough act to follow. This one does it right in a way that truly honors the original using its material and its style. If you haven't seen a live musical version of the original Mary Poppins, those are fun also, because they can take it just a bit further in terms of creative license and really drive home some of its themes that are slightly muted in the movie.

My only criticism of this sequel, especially since the highly touted Lin-Manuel Miranda was involved in it, was that I didn't come away remembering any of the songs. They were not catchy or memorable in the way that the original movie's soundtrack definitely was - some of its songs are still enjoyed today. The sequel's music seemed like an afterthought, in one ear and out the other. But in a way, that's better than overdoing it, and this movie's best feature was that they did not try to overdo anything.

The lack of memorable music was my wife's main criticism as well. I can sing at least three songs from the original right off the top of my head. But I doubt I will sing any of these. The true test will be if my daughter sings any 30 years from now.

The fact that Dick Van Dyke danced on a desk at age 91 pushed this over the top for me. I can only imagine how excited and happy he was to get that last hurrah!
