Good review! I feel where you're coming from but I don't entirely agree with your thoughts on Roy's wife. It's established from the opening scene that he's basically emotionally inert. Calmly reporting back to HQ on the radio while his colleagues just blew up and he's free falling at hundreds of miles per hour without being able to stabilize himself. They later confirm the inertness mentioning his heart rate didn't go ever above 80 bpm on mission, even the disaster.
Yea, but the characters “personalities” are “chosen” by the scriptwriters and guided by the director right. It is not like a natural habitat we are seeing... everything is calculated for effect
