SLC-S25/W1-Movie Snapshots | Around the world (Angrej)

I have watched many movies from different cultures and countries from Bollywood to Hollywood and more. I am interested in love stories as well as in the sci-fi and action movies.

Today I will talk about a romantic Punjabi movie which belongs to Bollywood and it is native from Indian culture. The name of this movie is Angrej. It was launched in 2015. It is a Punjabi language romantic drama comedy film which is set in the preparations of Punjab.

Main Idea of the Movie

The movie Angrej revolves around the traditional culture, love and emotional conflict between the true love and materialistic attraction of Punjab. The represents the culture from 1945. It highlights how love and marriage were perceived in the rural areas of the Punjab. It shows the clash between the emotions and expectations of the society. It tells us a heartfelt story of a simple village boy. The boy falls in love but faces a number of challenges due to the differences and the changing attitude of the relationship from the girl.

Main Characters

There are many characters in the movie but I will highlight the main characters of the movie. These are given below:

Angrej (Amrinder Gill)
This is the protagonist, kind hearted, straightforward and a simple village boy. This is the boy who falls in love. His movie name is Angrej but real name is Amrinder Gill.

Maado (Aditi Sharma)
This is the female character. It is the first love and interest of Angrej. She is influenced by the wealth and class.

Dhann Kaur (Sargun Mehta)
This is also a female character. She is a sweet and sensible girl. At the end she eventually wins the heart of Angrej. She wins with her innocence and sincerity.

Haakam (Ammy Virk)
This is a male character in the movie. He is a wealthy and proud man. He tries to win the heart of Maado with his status and richness.

Maado’s Grandmother (Nirmal Rishi)
She is an intelligent and wise old woman. She supports the idea of marrying into wealthy family.

Aslam (Binnu Dhillon)
This is another important male character. He is the loyal friend of Angrej. He supports the love journey of Angrej with his comic timing and supportive nature. He brings humour and emotional support to Angrej.

Plot and Setting

Here is the summary of the plot:

Angrej is a young man from rural Punjab. He falls in love with Maado. But I stead of choosing Angrej Maado chooses a rich suitor. That is Haakam. Angrej was heartbroken. Angrej gradually develops a bond with Dhann Kaur. She was a humble and genuine girl. As different events continues Angrej realizes the true meaning of love. In this way he decides to marry Dhann instead of Maado.

Here is the Setting:

The movie is beautifully set in the total Punjab prior the independence in 1945. It shows:

  • Traditional homes and village life
  • Punjabi customs, clothing, and dialect
  • Old school courtship and wedding rituals

The cinematography brings out the charm of simple village life before modernization.

If I Were the Director

If I were the director I would:

  1. Give more screen time to Dhann Kaur’s character like earlier in the film. It would help her to build her emotional connection with the audience sooner. In the movie her character appeared after the clash between Angrej and Madoo.

  2. Show more of the cultural backdrop. It will include how partition era changes affected the youth and love.

  3. Strengthen Haakam’s character arc to show his transformation or understanding by the end. Currently the movie left him flat without showing any consequences of his life. So the audience remained curious about this character. But I would show it completely to wipe out the curiosity.

  4. Include a stronger emotional closure between Angrej and Maado. It would be like a final conversation to show mutual respect or understanding between them.

I invite @sailawana, @mvchacin, @munaa to participate in this contest.
