FourPlay: When History & Pop Collide

in #music7 years ago (edited)

Hi There 😊

What??!! The weekend is over??? But I just got here... haha. This is how my son's Swim Meets are. The whole weekend is just hanging around at the stadium/pool supporting him while he waits his turn. Sometimes it is over 2 days, sometimes over 3. You get there before sunrise for warm-up and it is done by 6pm if everything goes as planned. And by the time you get home, you are so knackered you only have enough energy to do the absolutely necessary. And even though I started this on Saturday, something else happened that I had to share first.

This time we are in the historical town of Melaka (Malacca) for the swim meet. The story is, King Parameswara of Majapahit, found Melaka in the 1400s, saw it as a strategic place for a port and that was the start of what we know today as Malaysia. That got me thinking of all the songs that had used history as an inspiration. Sadly, most of them are unhappy events but because they are pop songs, we sing and even dance to it without really knowing what it is in relation to. These are my four picks for this round of FourPlay.

We Didn't Start The Fire - Billy Joel

Imagine a song that takes you through many years. It would be rushed, dropping names and events as memory joggers. And that's exactly this, starting with the year Joel was born - 1949, just about every 2 lines represents one year. The song calls out on events that had taken place prior to his birth that he feels shaped his generation. In particular, the Cold War, which the aftermath had been inherited by his generation.

Enola Gay - OMD

This upbeat retro pop is actually about the Boeing B-29 Superfortness Enola Gay. The aircraft responsible for dropping the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan in World War II.. It was named after the mother of bomber/pilot Colonel Paul Tibbets.

Zombie - The Cranberries

Another song about bombing, this time around the Irish Republican Army's bombing in England. Since 1916 the militant group did all they could to remove British troops from Northern Ireland. And then just a little after this song started getting airplay, after 25 years, in August 1994 the IRA declared ceasefire. Some critics wondered if this was because of the song.

Pompei - Bastille

Still another song about destruction but this time around of a volcano eruption in 79AD in the Roman City of Pompeii. The song is about what the dead corpses would have to say to each other. Frontman Dan Smith has said, he's amused to see people dancing to the song not really knowing what the song is about. When you think about it, it is kind of morbid.
