INTRODUCTION

Just as the host of this competition @edgargonzalez, comes forward with this topic on “harvest season," I want to say that it is a topic worthy for discussion. Come to think of, from the beginning of every year to the end of every year, there are farm crops that are would be due for harvest. So far farming is concerned, there would always be planting and harvesting season.

I hereby now, bring to you, the harvest season of the crop in my area as presented below.

Maize And Pears

Maize and corn are harvested simultaneously in my region. The maize is often eaten together with the pear. Nature made it in such away that as soon as maize begin to get matured, the pear also starts to get darkened and mature to be eaten with the maize together.

How To Know When A Product Is In Harvest Season (Maize and Pear)

There are indicators that show when a crop is due for harvest and as such, it would trigger the harvest of such crops. For maize here, these are some of the indicators showing that the season for harvesting maize has come:

  • The tassels begin to dry

  • The husks begin to show signs of dryness

  • The silk turns brown and dry

  • Feel the corn with your thumbs. Mature corn should be full in size and hard when dry.

  • The wet corn ready for harvest should also be full in size. When felt with the thumb, it releases milky and creamy substance

  • For dry corn, it begins to develop black layer as sign of maturity and ready to be harvested.

Generally, the product would seen in the market and along the roadside as people would be seen roasting corn on the street.

African Pear

To know when African Pear matures is simple.
For the African pear, It is usually white-pink when unripe. When riped, it turns black-blue color showing maturity and ready to be harvested.

Factors That Can Influence Harvest Time

In my area for instance, a number of factors can influence the harvesting of corn. These factors include:

  • Rainfall

  • Sunshine

  • Technology in use

  • The type of soil and fertility

  • Farming Inputs

Fruits that are currently being harvested in my community

Currently, maize and African pears are the that are now visibly in their harvest season. It amazing that the African pears gets matured to be harvested along the maize. This is Why both of them are eaten together.

In the market and along the roadside, corn sellers sell the corn together with the African pears. Eating this two crops together is really sweet and healthy.

Can these harvested products be sold at the same price as when they are not in harvest season?

No, not all will the price these harvested crops be sold at the same price outside their normal seasons. When these crops are in their full season the prices usually go down as they would be every where to be found in the market and in the streets. After the season, their cost usually go up 2 to 3 times of the prices when they were in their main season.

Now as it stands in my area, we enjoying these two crops together as they are now in their season in my area.

I love corn and pears and I get very excited when if is their season. I have special ways I enjoy my corn, it's either boiled, fried or roasted and I can pair if with pear, coconut or groundnut.

Most times I prepare the corn like a full time meal, the taste is always heavenly.

I do not bother about the price hike when it's not their season because my mom always have corn in her barn and most times, I don't work myself out for it because I know when it is their season, I'll enjoy them in full.
