Contest Announcement: Agriculture of Vegetables.
“Which is the main vegetable in your country and in which season is it produced?”
I live in Pakistan and here vegetables are a very important part of our daily food. Among many vegetables the most common and important one is the potato. Potatoes are grown in large amounts in different parts of the country. They are usually produced in the winter season because the climate is suitable for their growth at that time. In addition to potatoes onions and tomatoes are also very popular and used daily in cooking. These vegetables are produced in different seasons according to their needs. For example tomatoes grow well in warm weather while onions are produced in both summer and winter depending on the region. From this we can understand that every vegetable has its own season and it grows best when the season matches its requirement.
How important is the selection of season in vegetable production?”
The selection of the right season is very important in agriculture. If farmers grows vegetables in the wrong season they wills not gets good results. Vegetables need propers sunlight temperature and water at the right times to grow healthy. For example if we try to grow potatoes in very hot weather they will not grow properly and may be damaged. Similarly some vegetables like spinach grow best in the winter season while others like okra and cucumbers grow well in summer. When farmers select the right season they save their money time and effort. They also produce better quality vegetables which are fresh and full of nutrition. Wrong season selection not only reduces production but also causes loss to farmers. That is why the season is considered the backbone of successful vegetable farming.
How does the production and sale of vegetables affect the financial policy of a country?”
This is a very important point because agriculture is directly linked to the economy of a country. When the production of vegetables is high the prices in the market remain stable. People can buy vegetables at a reasonable price and farmers also earn a good income. On the other hand if production is low the demand becomes higher than the supply and prices go up. This creates problems for poor families because they cannot afford daily vegetables. Also the government has to take steps to import vegetables from other countries which affects the financial policy and balance of trade. Good vegetable production helps the country to be self-sufficient and even allows it to export vegetables to other countries. This brings foreign exchange and improves the economy. So the production and sale of vegetables play a strong role in shaping the financial policy of any country.
“How important do you think the environment and soil selection are in vegetable production?”
I believe that the environment and soil are the foundation of vegetable farming. Vegetables grow best in clean healthy and fertile soil. If the soil is full of natural nutrients farmers do not need to use too many fertilizers. Each vegetable has its own soil requirement. For example carrots grow well in sandy soil because it allows the roots to go deep and become long. On the other hand potatoes grow better in loose well-drained soil. Along with soil the environment is also very important. If the environment is polluted it affects the quality of vegetables. Good rainfall clean water for irrigation fresh air and the right temperature all help in healthy vegetable production. If farmers do not care about soil and environment the production will decrease and the vegetables will not be of good quality. That is why modern agriculture always focuses on protecting the soil and environment.
