I grew up on Long Island, and later lived in Illinois and New Hampshire, and so I've experienced a lot of frozen ponds.

The pond you're talking about building would likely freeze simply because it would probably be pretty small?

Once in Illinois, I went ice skating on a frozen marsh. It was pretty badly bumpy, and the skates were too tight, and my ankles hurt, but I still had fun. I spotted a fish frozen in the ice.

My curiosity led me to chip out a block of ice with the fish in it. I took it home and thawed it in a bathtub to see if it would revive, but it turned out to be dead. So much for my experiment...

Of course, that was B.I. (Before Internet), and I just took a look now and found this:
