Nepal’s Social Media Ban

On September 4, 2025, Nepal made headlines by banning 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X, for failing to register with the government. 😮 This move, backed by a Supreme Court ruling and the Social Media Directives 2080, has sparked debate about regulation, free speech, and digital life in Nepal. Here’s a quick look at what’s going on.

The Nepali government required all social media platforms to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology by August 28, 2025, appointing local contact points for accountability. Despite multiple warnings since November 2023, big names like Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), Alphabet (YouTube), and X ignored the deadline. As a result, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority was ordered to block these platforms starting midnight on September 4. Only five platforms—TikTok, Viber, Witk, Nimbuzz, and Popo Live—are currently registered and allowed to operate, while Telegram and Global Diary are under review.

The government says the ban is about curbing misinformation, cybercrime, and ensuring tax compliance, as platforms like Facebook earn ad revenue from Nepal without local oversight. However, critics, including the Federation of Nepali Journalists, argue it threatens free speech and disrupts businesses, creators, and daily communication. Many Nepalis rely on WhatsApp and Messenger to connect with family abroad, and the ban could hit small businesses hard. Some fear users will turn to risky VPNs, increasing costs for internet providers.

This isn’t Nepal’s first social media clampdown—TikTok was banned in 2023 but reinstated after registering in 2024. The government insists platforms can resume operations once they comply, but the strict rules have raised concerns about censorship.

That's unfortunate. Social media ban could also limit people from finding out what's going on in the world. By the way, now that you're running a witness node, I think you should write an announcement post on Steemit. I've already exhausted my witness account @jswit's vote, so I'll vote for you with my other account. Good luck!

thank you so much, Yes i am preparing a Post now , Just need to finish some Modification
