Sounds like an excellent plan!
A good way to be "successful" on Steemit is to read other people's blogs and post thoughtful comments. This earns you followers and upvotes faster than anything else (unless you're a celebrity).
Posts with photos get the most attention, so you may want to consider adding one when you write.
