New Delhi, June 11, 2025: India is once again witnessing a surge in Covid-19 cases. According to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry, the number of active cases in the country has crossed 6,800 with 324 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. Three deaths have also been reported during this period. Karnataka and Gujarat are among the worst-affected states, while Kerala has the highest number of active cases.

Rising cases in Karnataka and Gujarat
Karnataka reported 136 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the number of active cases in the state to 423. According to health officials, intensive surveillance and testing has been increased in Bengaluru and surrounding areas. Gujarat also reported 129 new cases, taking the number of active cases to 980. Gujarat is seeing cases of Omicron LF.7.9 and XFG sub-variants with mild symptoms.

Kerala becomes hotspot
The active cases in Kerala have reached 2,053, the highest in the country. 96 new cases were registered here in the last 24 hours. Health experts say that immunity acquired from vaccination and previous infection is weakening over time, increasing the risk of re-infection.

Mortality and risk
Three deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, one each from Delhi, Kerala and Jharkhand. Experts say that deaths due to Kovid-19 are mostly seen in people who already have serious health problems like cancer, diabetes, heart disease or lung disease.

Health Ministry's alertness
The Health Ministry has directed the states to ensure the availability of oxygen supply, isolation beds, ventilators and essential medicines. Technical review meetings were held in New Delhi on June 2 and 3, which were attended by representatives from the Disaster Management Cell, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

New variant of the virus
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has marked the new sub-variant of Omicron as a 'variant under surveillance'. A sample of this variant from Tamil Nadu in India has been sent to INSACOG. However, most cases are mild and the hospitalisation rate is low.

Precautions and tips
Health experts are advising to wear masks, maintain social distancing and get periodic check-ups. The central government has started mock drills to assess the preparedness of hospitals across the country.
