// 5G NEWS // The European Union Validates 5G In Connected Cars
European states have chosen 5G as the technological backbone of connected and autonomous cars. This is a departure from the Wi-Fi path that had been preferred by the European parliamentarians.
The 5G triumphs! Meeting in Brussels on Thursday, representatives of the European states gave the green light to the diffusion of this technology in connected and autonomous cars that will be allowed to circulate in the Union.
The vote was welcomed by telecoms lobbying group ETNO, whose members have spent billions investing in 5G. The ministers of the 27 will meet on July 8 to formalize the announcement, which is not insignificant.
Because if technology lovers see (rightly) 5G as the future in telecommunications, because of the smartphone bias, the technology pushed by Qualcomm, BWM, Intel, Huawei or
Peugeot SA was not the only one in the running.
Rejection of the Wi-Fi project
One might think it was only a formality, but in fact the heads of state’s representatives who validated the primacy of 5G in cars did so against the Wi-Fi "project". A technological project led by certain European manufacturers - Renault, Toyota, NXP, etc. - and which had been validated in April by the European Parliament.
The Wi-Fi camp argued that the technology is already available and therefore more quickly deployable and less expensive, while the 5G camp promoted as many applications of the standard as possible and the best performance.
“We will therefore continue to work together with member states to address their concerns and find a suitable way forward,” European Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc said in a statement on Thursday following the vote.
Governments have therefore chosen the "future path" by giving priority to a technology that is still in development, but with much greater potential.
