Automobiles have a primary purpose that is vital to society a gun's primary purpose is to kill. Beyond that though there is automobile control in place. You have to have a license and there are reasons you can be banned from driving. Why not the same for guns? Do you think "crazy" people should be allowed to own guns?
Let me be clear I'm not for banning guns, I'm for reasonable gun control laws. Of course the term reasonable does open a pandora's box of interpretation but that is the case for many laws. Where I live if I really want a gun I could get one after going through a licensing process and I'm okay with that.

Interesting perspective but I have to disagree.
To me that would be a secondary result of the primary purpose being violent destruction of a target. It can only save a life through killing/disabling a threat or deterrence due to the implied threat of violence.
It's not like they are flotation devices or can be used to perform CPR. I will freely admit they can be quite useful though, especially in a rural setting. I'm all for responsible gun ownership and licensing.
Do you think a paranoid schizophrenic that hears voices and sees people that aren't there should be able to have a gun collection? Another example I can think of would be a suicidal manic depressive with a documented history of attempts on their own life.
To me stopping the mentally ill from acquiring firearms is a lot like not letting a blind person drive a car.

@contentjunkie is right. Guns are Preemptive Murder devices. Which is why leaving it only to fictional hierarchies to decide who is armed or not is sociopathic hysteria. Don't want a gun, don't own one. I'm more worried about the teenager who just got a new car and a cellphone. We all have our hysterias. Let's just agree not to use state violence one another to enforce our worries to each other.
