NO Questions
It’s now been over three years since I’ve been part of a curator team again. With Team Europe, we had/have big plans. Not to turn everything upside down, but to possibly offer some different approaches. A week of truly hard work is almost behind us, and the disappointment runs deep.
This isn’t meant to be a complaint post - it won’t change anything anyway, though it might help to let some of the built-up sadness out. Besides, the-gorilla already said so much concerning "What happened Steemit?" in a very personal post - things that speak directly to what I feel. And the recent post by denmarkguy also expresses exactly what’s on the minds of our team members.
Still, I feel the urge to share a few of my own thoughts with the world. Fairly neutrally - I simply want to ask you a few questions. A bit all over the place, but here goes:
- Have you ever spent more than half an hour writing a post?
- Do you look after your post once it’s published (or are you already rushing to the next one)?
- Would you want to read your own post?
- Would you pay for it?
- Would you pay as much as bigger stakeholders potentially could—yet you clearly expect them to?
- Are you aware that violating copyright (e.g., through plagiarism) is considered a serious offense in most countries around the world?
- Do you actually read the posts you vote for?
- Do you engage with them?
- Do you write comments that show the author you really engaged with their post?
- Do you spend more than 3 minutes (if at all) on a comment?
- Do you expect comments on your own posts?
- Do you respond to those who took the time to write something for you?
- Do you at least acknowledge their comment with a vote?
- Have you built a network?
- Do you enjoy interacting with it?
- Is your network (made up of real people!) able to vote your posts past the payout threshold?
- Would you still be here if the Steemit team and all its curation teams suddenly stopped voting tomorrow?
- Is it an issue that major stakeholders might rather focus solely on themselves and delegate their SP elsewhere?
- Are you embarrassed that, due to you delegated a large part/ all of your SP, you can no longer support the community the way you expect it to support you?
- Do you keep track of what your vote trail is voting for on your behalf?
- Are you embarrassed by the kind of crap your SP ends up “supporting”?
- Do you sometimes feel ashamed to be an active Steemian - a part of this “community”?
- Is the word “greed” a negative term for you?
- Do you think the Steemit team sometimes feels sick when they see what their SP has been used for?
And on and on... So to wrap it up, three final questions:
- Do you expect more from Steem than just “a quick coin”?
- Do you see a future for Steem?
- Do you believe that you, as an individual, can help keep interest in this platform alive?
Okay. Writing these questions down, as random as they are, actually felt quite good.
If you answered even one of these questions with NO, please take a minute for some honest self-reflection.
If you answered several with NO, then please find yourself another hobby - before you ruin the hobby of the few human users who are still here and still care.

You have given everyone something to reflect on but sadly users who need this the most won't even read it and are busy in their game of greed.
Half hour for a post? Sometimes my comments take longer than that.

I’ve never been able to write a post in such a short time — and honestly, I don’t think I ever will. Even though I can think fast and note things down quickly, putting together a post always takes more time, more thought, and a little piece of heart!

Sometimes it takes days though I have the same abilities you have.
I wonder how all those who don't even understand the language that they use for posting manage 1-3 posts a day. Argh... NO, I don't... 😉

They won't... But it was good to just write these questions down (burnt up some of my afternoon...). And all those who read it have once again been brought up to date with my current (never really changed much...) attitude.
Here's my ‘sorry’ to everyone who read this low-quality post just because I'm Chriddi.
I don't even need less than an hour for the shallowest content... 😔
But not everyone has to shout NO! already at the very first question... 😂

It felt good reading these questions — kind of a silent self-validation.
It was hard to skip. 😅
Mich begleitet Steemit seit 2016.

Greetings, friend @germansailor
I liked your comment; it seems sincere and real. We all come here with the intention of making money; however, the daily routine becomes a habit, and the need to stay constantly active arises. Financially, anyone who has invested in Steem has little chance of losing, and Steem has many benefits for generating dividends.
Long live you.

Many Thanks!

Once again, you're back in those curator shoes…
Well, some people wear them over and over like their favourite old slippers — without ever stopping to think about things like:
Well well well…
I must admit, I’m guilty of at least one of the accusations.
(Just one, Your Honour — I swear!)
Yes, sometimes when my SP is just lying around and I’m super super busy, I do a bit of skim-voting.
But in my defense, those votes are usually for authors I trust. (They’re the good ones — pinky promise!)
Apart from that little slip, I can almost say "Yes" to all the other questions with a clear conscience.
Honestly, these questions/reservations should be etched into every Steemian’s
homepagebrain.Coming to the most important ones,
Because if any one can answer the first one with a clear conscience, they have passed the test with flying colours:
Yes. Yes. And YES.

Thank you for your detailed comment and self-reflection (definitely longer than a minute...), which you didn't need. But never mind, because those who need to, don't read this anyway...
Hahaha, I haven't stalked you since you have no more delegation from me. So you no longer vote for the big known users in the so known community like you did in the beginning?!... 😉
The last YES is the YES that everyone really needs to internalise. Otherwise we'll starve to death faster than Denmarkguy could ever predict!

@chriddi. My two cents worth reply to your post.
For the amount of work that you do, and the time you spend on here, you have every right to be frustrated at the ‘sub-standard’ material that you find. You certainly are entitled to a rant and a grunt every now and then to get it out of your system. However, maybe you should take a look at the situation with a different perspective.
The way I understand it, Steem is a decentralised platform. Although there are communities to keep a look out and maintain certain standards, there is no one to evaluate members and say who can join, who can’t. Hence, you will find tom, dick, harry and karen here. They are all here for their own reasons. Some to see if they can luck it, make a coin or two in the process. They don’t necessarily care about the outcome of their actions and some do not understand what they do is not right. And then there are some who genuinely want to see if they can add value to the platform, only to be disappointed with the dismayed results of their efforts.
A lot of the stuff that goes on here is quite beyond our control. What we can do is to contribute what we can and hope that there are more like minded people on here doing the same. And if that is not enough and Steem heads south, at least we can say we did what we could.
For a long time, I wasn’t confident enough to post, or comment. When I eventually built up the courage to do so, imagine my disappointment when I got only a couple of cents for a nicely crafted post. Still, I persevere. My confidence to write and post a personal opinion is my motivation. I was slowly building my confidence. The occasional dollar or two for the posts was a bonus.
And then you came along and pointed out what I shouldn’t have done or be doing. I am more hopeful of my prospects here now, thanks to you. I am sure there are people like me doing their best without realizing what they did was wrong. They are also hoping that one day some curator will discover them and give them a chance to shine.
I guess what I am trying to say is that since we do not have a lot of choice, we got to work with what we have. You will find that other social media platforms are also having the same problems. Steem is no better, no worse. We just need to understand the situation, accept the facts and be realistic in our expectations. The less expectations we have, the least disappointed there will be. Take it easy and don’t stress yourself out too much.
Best wishes to you and Team Europe!
Cheers!

You've pretty much summed up why curating content is so complicated right now... I recently tried to automate part of my voting, and what I was going to do was support people I know are (at least) creating content responsibly. But I wasn't able to do that due to glitches in the tool, and I was stuck with manual voting. I know how the delegated part of my SP is used because it's the account of the community I'm part of... And if I could summarize my concern, it would be the general lack of awareness about what it means to share content.
It's almost like the chorus of a song: Do it with meaning, with significance.
I confess that I dislike insipid comments, which seem like they only read the title. I feel like saying, "Why are you commenting if you didn't read it?" Although I've responded that way to the most obvious ones several times. Lol.😅
I sum it up as a lack of awareness, of brainpower? And it's not like you need to write a treatise... But even a meme can be good if it has some elaboration and a message... There should be some elaboration, right?
I'll stick with your question...
If I write or do something well, whether it's beautiful, funny, with a sense of humor, or whether it's drawing attention to something that's meaningful to me, I'll be doing something for Steemit, which is creating something that's worth something to me, and that can eventually inspire others. And when I say "me," I mean anyone...
The important thing is that I do it with meaning, with significance, that I put my heart into it. Everyone will see what that something is, right?
If we expect nothing but money, what happens with anything we expect nothing but money from will happen: It'll just be a job. And as Facundo Cabral said, "He who works at something he doesn't love is unemployed." He's wasting his time.

I don’t know. More often than not, I write for myself and don’t really care if others like it or not. I write to release, to get things off my chest. But I make sure I don’t pollute anyone’s feed with my ramblings - that’s why I stick to my personal blog and only occasionally play around with the tags.
Now, am I adding value to Steem by doing that? Depends. What’s valuable to me might be garbage to someone else.
So another question would be - should we write for others? Or should we write what genuinely interests us, even if it holds no obvious value for the community or anyone else?
In other words: does something need to be valuable to others to be worth sharing at all?
This is just one of the dilemmas faced by those struggling to keep up on this platform. We want to add value but are usually restrained by the status quo - by expectations, trends, or what content seems to be "worth" posting...
Edit: Just reflecting alongside you

Alright...let me do this as it could be easier to grab and perhaps add a little fun.
Steemit values = Authenticity + Organic Engagement(not forced) + Quality content + Fun
Where "not forced" = 1
Well, I can understand the frustration of getting some of these during your team's curation.
I am still positive that someday.., these things will be fixed. Interestingly, some great authors still hold on to this etiquettes.
We try! We really try so hard! But if obstacles are put in your way everywhere, you will quickly despair.
On top of that: In the team, we are a group of users who really don't need to waste their time for a few lousy coins. We really started with a good approach (and also a bit motivated, hoping to convey the right vibes). In the meantime, we are sorry to have even wasted a thought on a possible application... 😔

100% I know that, I have always known that.
And it is obvious. It's just that sometimes, these issues prolong. And you know what they say...? We don't have ability to solve all problems.
I really hope the message you wrote gets to the entire community as it is very important. Because if we cannot answer those questions, then there is a problem.
I believe everyone understands that your team's narrative was to uphold the good etiquettes of the platform, you have tried, your team have tried as well.
Please don't feel bad. There are users who still cherish your team and effort.
