You have not been paying good attention to what your heart wants. You have been ignoring your intuition in favor of what you believe - think the world wants you to be /do - the result is that you have opened the door for negative forces to enter.
We all have free will. When we use it aligned with God's will for us and for the highest good of all we benefit beyond our wildest dreams yet when we use free will against the Truth, we open the door to spiritual attack- low self-esteem, apathy, confusion - the solution - Seek God - Here the mermaid has a chioce- she can go deeply within her natural environment (water) within her heart to find hereself or she can continue to seek answers outside her natural self (air) and find the opposite- Prayer, meditation, getting right with those harmed and service to others are paths back to true purpose.
