I don't get the fear in the dark in the bush. I used to do similar activities when I was younger. For me, I found surrending to the situation was a better way to handle the fear rather than fighting to overcome. We do such activities as a way of exposing ourselves to a little controlled hardship so that we're more resilient if really bad things do happen. The psychological aspects of surviving a disaster often outweigh the physical ones.
