Being a single parent

We always focus more on children with single parents and sympathize with them, but the fact is that at times it is more challenging for the single parent with their child, because they have to fill in both the shoes of father and mother. My parents separated when I was 5 and my father had my and my sister's custody. He had to fill in for my mother also because we were so small then. When I look back at those times and from what I remember I realize that more than us it was him who had to face major challenges in raising us. Be it financially or emotionally, he had to take care of everything.

I was so small and sometimes I craved for my mother, I did not understand their situation, and it was not possible for me to meet her. Yet my father would somehow take care of my emotions and pacify me, and I realize now it must have been so challenging for him to deal with, to not make me upset and at the same time not able to meet my mother also. In a normal house both the parents take care of the child, while one may earn, the other will look after the growing up of the child. But for a single parent it is both and they need to make sure, it's done in the best possible manner. It is not easy.

For my father, he had financial challenges also, but still, I do not remember him ever saying no to any of our demands. Not that me and my sister had any big demands but still whatever we asked for he would provide. By the end of his life, he was so exhausted that he landed up with multiple health issues. I felt god was very unfair to him. A single parent tries to provide financially and emotionally to their children, but in the bargain, they forget themselves, and trust me no one even bothers or feels sorry for them, everyone will only have pity for the children. My dad would go to work, cook for us, take care of us and do every possible thing that both the parents would do together in a house for their children.

I believe that a single parent is like an Angel to the child, they have those super power wings to fit into both the shoes of father and mother. Every time I see a single parent taking good care of their child, I feel super proud of them and remember my father. He left me very soon in life and I could not do anything for him. His love was so selfless, he only gave all the time but did not even give me or my sister an opportunity to pay back. Only Angels can do that.
