I hadn't seen the 1935 one, when I went looking for the one I posted. I watched it up until Marley came through the door, but there was no actor. He said that Scrooge was the only one that could see him, and he meant it! Not even the audience could see him, lol.

I've thought about it, and I think that their doing it with just a voice was possibly due to saving on the film's budget. It would be an easy way out of paying some actor in makeup with chains around his neck when they could get away with the invisibility, since I believe that is an actual line in the novella.
