What is Cogito Ergo Sum?

Cogito Ergo Sum; translated to 'I think, therefore I am' is seemingly the most famous of every single philosophical argument; this being stated, the argument has had its fair share of critique. Cogito Ergo Sum presupposes the presence of 'I' while reaching the conclusion of the previously mentioned 'I' that exists.

The primary issue with Descartes is that it expects that 'all thoughts have thinkers'. Descartes never endeavours to establish this in his work.

So all Descartes ought to have said, there are thoughts now, yet if he had said that it would have been difficult for him to conclude 'I' exists unless he expected that all thoughts have a thinker. He's saying, you can only be assured of your own existence even if you doubt all else.

Descartes was only able to bridge the gap between a thinking human and knowledge obtained in the world by first proving the presence of God and it is uncertain whether anything of his argument remains of the proof of God is rejected.

Critiques By Philosophers

This is the brief critique the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard gave. Expressing that proving the presence of 'I' in a framework in which it already does is logically trivial. A further study challenges the reality of 'I think'; placing that this kind of intelligence is impossible to acquire.

Is the argument really any different than stating 'I see, therefore I am' or, 'I hear, therefore I am'? Sceptics would challenge the truth of the first part, as do some for this specific argument.

The argument does not have a certain premise (if it somehow happened to be a valid argument); the premise to make this argument valid would be 'whatever has the property of thinking, exists'.

Cogito Ergo Sum is the acknowledgement of existing. For if you didn't exist, you would not know that you can think, however...

When the self-awareness dissolves there is only an awareness. Of what? An 'I'? A 'this'? A Oneness? A duality? Of everything? Of nothing?

Are we truly in charge or do we simply consider our actions?

Existence is the crucial appearance from which all things determine their appearance. So, when I make the inquiry 'Am I?' the main thing I can answer comfortably is that 'I appear to be.' As does everything else.

There is no real way to know whether 'I am' without there being an 'I'. However in moments when the immersion is deep and absolute that there is no notion of even being here.

The truth of the matter is existence can only be known through reflection (either internal or external). Much the same as how a photon collapses into either a particle or a wave exactly when awareness touches it. Before that, there is only a potentially, not an actuality.
