There is a lot of really good competition in the "straightforward" edits. That makes it hard to stand out if you -in fairness- have no clue what you are doing. So yeah, some over-the-top creative stuff is what comes out. Most edit-rounds contain some of both anyway... because it is quite tiring, that photoshop.
