Initially known by its breeder code ‘3-35-40’, the rose's cultivation and naming took on a deeper meaning as the Second World War began. With the fall of France looming, Meilland sent cuttings of the new rose to friends and partners in Italy, Germany, and the United States in a desperate effort to preserve the plant.
The rose was finally introduced in the United States on April 29, 1945, the very day Berlin fell to Allied forces—a powerful coincidence that inspired its name, ‘Peace’. It was formally named during the inaugural meeting of the United Nations in San Francisco, where each delegate received a bloom of the rose along with a note:
“We hope the 'Peace' rose will influence men’s thoughts for everlasting world peace.”
