The Squacco Heron is a small and elegant heron species known for its striking transformation between its breeding and non-breeding plumages, as well as its preference for still or slow-moving freshwater habitats. Distribution and Habitat
The Squacco Heron is a migratory bird that breeds primarily in southern Europe and parts of western and central Asia, then winters in sub-Saharan Africa. Its range spans countries from Spain and Italy in the west to Kazakhstan and India in the east. During migration and in the winter, it can be seen across a vast portion of the African continent, especially in wetland-rich environments.

Physical Description

Breeding Plumage: This is when the Squacco Heron is at its most striking. Its back and crest become rich golden-buff, while its underparts remain creamy white. Its long, wispy crest feathers and blue base of the bill add to its attractive breeding display.
Non-breeding Plumage: Outside of the breeding season, it appears much duller, with streaky brown upperparts and white underparts—perfect camouflage among reeds and dry grasses.
