Marsdenia is a diverse genus of flowering plants hundred species distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of the world including Asia Africa Australia and the Americas the plants in this genus vary widely in growth form ranging from twining climbers and woody vines to shrubs and small trees they are often evergreen and are recognized for their attractive foliage and clusters of small but fragrant flowers that play an important role in attracting pollinators such as bees butterflies and moths.

The leaves are usually opposite simple and leathery with a glossy green surface while the stems are often flexible in climbing species allowing them to scramble over other vegetation many species of Marsdenia produce milky latex typical of the Apocynaceae family and some also develop follicles containing seeds with silky hairs that aid in wind dispersal the flowers are usually star-shaped with five petals and may be creamy white yellow green or sometimes tinged with purple although individually small.

They are produced in dense clusters creating a striking display in their natural habitats these plants thrive in warm humid climates often growing in forest margins riverbanks and scrublands and they prefer well-drained soil with moderate to high fertility some species are cultivated ornamentally for their attractive vines and pleasantly scented flowers while others have ethnobotanical importance in traditional medicine in various cultures extracts from Marsdenia species have been used to treat ailments such as respiratory issues skin problems and digestive disorders though scientific validation of these uses remains limited in addition to medicinal uses some species contain compounds of interest for pharmacological research because of the presence of alkaloids saponins.
