Meadow sage is a perennial flowering plant in the mint family Lamiaceae native to Europe and western Asia it is widely admired for its tall spikes of violet-blue purple or sometimes pink flowers that bloom from late spring to midsummer the plant typically grows to a height of 30 to 90 centimeters with square stems and opposite pairs of wrinkled slightly hairy leaves the lower leaves are larger and more rounded while the upper leaves are smaller and lance-shaped its flowers are arranged in whorls along the stem each with a tubular two-lipped corolla designed to attract pollinators such as bees butterflies.
