Scarlet rosemallow is a striking perennial flowering plant native to the southeastern United States where it thrives in wetlands, marshes, riverbanks, and moist woodlands. This plant is admired for its tall, upright growth habit and its large, brilliant scarlet-red flowers that make it a popular ornamental choice in gardens and landscapes. It typically grows to a height of 4 to 7 feet, with sturdy, unbranched stems that give the plant a strong architectural presence. The leaves are deeply lobed, resembling the shape of a maple leaf or even the foliage of cannabis, which often sparks curiosity among observers. Each leaf is bright green, with five to seven narrow lobes, and provides a striking contrast to the vivid red flowers.

The flowers are the main highlight of scarlet rosemallow, measuring 6 to 8 inches across, with five slender, pointed petals that radiate like a star and surround a prominent central column of stamens. These blooms are nectar-rich and attract pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees, playing an important ecological role in supporting biodiversity. Blooming occurs in mid to late summer, with flowers appearing sequentially along the tall stems, ensuring a continuous display of color for several weeks.

Scarlet rosemallow is a hardy plant that prefers full sun and moist to wet soils, making it ideal for rain gardens, pond edges, or low-lying areas prone to occasional flooding. It is tolerant of heavy clay soils and can withstand short periods of drought once established, although it performs best with consistent moisture. The plant is also resistant to deer browsing, which adds to its value in naturalized and wildlife-friendly gardens. In addition to its ornamental appeal, scarlet rosemallow has cultural and historical significance. Native American tribes were known to use parts of the plant for medicinal purposes, while today it continues to symbolize passion, vitality, and natural beauty due to its striking red blossoms.
