TUSSOCK MOTH / Caterpillar
I believe this is a Hickory Tussock Moth caterpillar, "Lophocampa caryne" crawling around my backyard.

These cuddly looking critters do excrete a poison if touched. Some people are more allergic and can develop swelling and nausea.
Looks like a spiky little critter with a built in protection system. Better leave well alone ;)
In the interests of health and safety I'll spread the word.
They are very attractive and invite you to pick them up. Like a diseased hooker.

Man, the tussocks are out in full force this last month. I've seen three types here so far. They sure are pretty caterpillars but nothing I want to touch (again) haha.
Eastern L.I. still has it's rural areas but fading fast.
Great photo of that pretty caterpillar! I never touch any caterpillars because I know I would be allergic to them with all of my allergies. Better to be safe than sorry.
