Slot canyon photography can be very challenging, and the fact that your dad managed to take a good photograph in such an environment indicates that he is good at it. It has come out well given that it must have been a tough task.

I believe that that there is a lot of dust in the canyons which can affect the quality of the photographs, although it is the settings that could have been tweaked a bit here.
