Origins and History
Rosa 'Queen Elizabeth' was bred in 1954 by Dr. Walter Lammerts in the United States, and it quickly gained international acclaim. The rose was named to honor the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, a fitting tribute to a monarch whose reign has spanned decades and defined an era.
The rose is a cross between the floribunda ‘Charlotte Armstrong’ and the hybrid tea ‘Floradora’. This lineage gave rise to a unique rose variety that essentially pioneered the grandiflora class—a group of roses that merges the size and form of hybrid teas with the blooming clusters and hardiness of floribundas.
Its introduction marked a turning point in rose breeding, offering the best of both worlds in terms of appearance and performance. It was also one of the first roses to be inducted into the World Federation of Rose Societies’ Rose Hall of Fame in 1979.
