Wonderful Colour Cypress Vine Flower
Cypress vine, also known as Cardinal Climber or Star Glory, is a delicate, twining plant admired for its feathery foliage and bright, star-shaped flowers. Belonging to the morning glory family, this annual vine has become a favorite among gardeners for its ability to transform fences, trellises, and arbors into vibrant green curtains sprinkled with striking red, pink, or white blooms. Originating in tropical regions of the Americas, cypress vine has spread worldwide and is particularly beloved in warm climates for its rapid growth and ornamental charm.
Appearance and Characteristics
Cypress vine is immediately recognizable for its finely divided, thread-like leaves that resemble soft green fern fronds. This foliage gives the vine a light, airy texture, making it an attractive backdrop even before the flowers appear. The blossoms themselves are small—about 2–3 cm across—but their brilliant color and perfect star shape create a dazzling effect. The flowers open early in the day, often closing by afternoon, and are especially attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies.
As a vigorous climber, cypress vine can grow 10–20 feet in a single season, quickly covering vertical supports. Its twining stems need something to grasp, such as strings, trellises, or mesh, making it ideal for vertical gardening or hiding unsightly structures.
Growing Conditions and Care
Cypress vine thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering, particularly in hot, dry periods. To encourage lush growth and continuous blooming, apply a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer every few weeks.
Sow seeds directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, or start them indoors 4–6 weeks early for a head start. The seeds have a hard coat and will germinate more reliably if nicked or soaked in water overnight before planting. Because the vine grows so quickly, even late plantings can produce impressive displays before the end of summer.
