Box-thorns scientifically known as Lycium are a group of flowering plants belonging to the Solanaceae they are widely distributed across warm and temperate regions of the world including Asia Europe Africa and the Americas with several species being cultivated or naturally occurring among the best-known members of this genus is Lycium barbarum and Lycium chinense commonly known as goji berries which have gained global recognition for their edible fruits and medicinal properties box-thorns are usually deciduous or semi-evergreen shrubs that vary in height from one to four meters depending on the species.

They are characterized by their thorny branches small narrow leaves and funnel-shaped flowers that appear singly or in small clusters the flowers are generally purple violet or white with five lobes and they bloom in spring or summer followed by small fleshy berries that turn bright red orange or sometimes black when ripe the berries are not only visually attractive but also serve as a food source for birds and other wildlife in many regions the plant has adapted well to dry and poor soils showing high tolerance for drought and salinity which makes it an important shrub in arid landscapes agriculturally some box-thorn species are cultivated for their berries.
