It was a familiar yet unsettling tranquility. The serene canal, reflecting the muted grey sky, stretched out, bordered by the stoic stone walls and a neat row of budding trees. A gentle rain began to fall, not a downpour, but a soft, persistent drizzle that created ripples across the water's surface, each one a tiny, expanding secret.

As I walked alongside the water, a subtle shift occurred. The distant buildings seemed to shimmer, their edges blurring as if seen through a heat haze. The trees, previously dormant with winter's last breath, suddenly unfurled vibrant green leaves, then just as quickly, turned to autumn golds and fiery reds before shedding them again, all within a few blinks. The speed of nature's cycle was mesmerizing and disorienting.

And it ended as the path curved sharply, revealing not the familiar Imperial Palace gates, but an ancient, weathered torii gate, its vermillion faded and chipped. Beyond it, a thick fog rolled in from the water, obscuring everything and inviting a sense of mystery about what lay beyond, just out of sight.
