The sun, a slow and heavy coin of gold,
Sinks low above the quiet, waiting bay.
The tide retreats, a story to be told
In whispers from the ending of the day.
The fishing boats, with painted, weathered bows,
Lie silent on the sand, a gentle rest,
As if to keep forgotten, humble vows
To all the sea that's put them to the test.

I walked this shore in days that now feel lost,
The grainy sand beneath my younger feet.
I felt the warmth, whatever was the cost,
 The salty air, so bittersweet.
I watched the distant sails, a silent dream,
Upon the endless, shifting blue expanse,
Reflecting back the sun's expiring gleam,
Lost in a waking, half-forgotten trance.

That light still holds a memory, so clear,
Of laughter carried on the soft sea breeze.
The steady sound of waves is all I hear,
A melody that puts my soul at ease.
It pulls me back to moments I can't touch,
A fragile feeling, delicate and deep.
A time when life didn't demand so much,
And promises were easy to keep.

The photograph holds fast this fading light,
 A still-life of a life I used to know.
And in this framed and momentary sight,
I feel the tide of memory ebb and flow.
And though the years have turned the pages fast,
And left me standing on a different shore,
A part of me will always be held fast
To that one sunset I remember more.
