Common Morning-Glory: A Blooming Marvel of the Morning Sun
The Common Morning-Glory is a fast-growing, twining vine celebrated for its vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers that unfurl in the early hours of the day. Belonging to the family Convolvulaceae, this ornamental beauty has been cultivated and admired for centuries, both for its dazzling appearance and its easy-going nature in the garden. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, the plant has since naturalized across much of the world, thriving in a variety of climates and soils.
Botanical Characteristics
The Common Morning-Glory is an annual climber that can reach heights of 6–10 feet within a single growing season. Its stems are slender and twining, capable of wrapping around trellises, fences, or any available support. The leaves are heart-shaped, with a soft green texture that adds lushness to its climbing form.
The most striking feature, of course, is its flower. Each bloom is a funnel-shaped trumpet, typically ranging in color from deep purples and blues to pinks and whites. A delicate white or yellow throat often radiates outward from the flower’s center, giving it a star-like pattern. These flowers open in the early morning sunlight, closing by midday—a natural adaptation to attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds during cooler hours.
Growth and Cultivation
Morning-glories are remarkably easy to grow from seed. Gardeners often nick or soak the seeds before planting to speed up germination. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil, but they are adaptable and can thrive in less-than-perfect conditions. Being rapid climbers, they are perfect for vertical gardening—ideal for covering unsightly fences, creating floral arches, or adding shade to pergolas.
