Glowing Plankton Bloom in California's Big Sur

Glowing waves in California's Big Sur were a result of bioluminescence, a phenomenon caused by a phytoplankton bloom. High concentrations of tiny organisms called dinoflagellates flooded the coastal waters and were flashing light when agitated by encroaching predators.
