RE: The circle glen (Day 74 of 100 -- Poetry challenge)
In terms of the colour of the tone of this piece, it puts me in mind of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," but this is more somber, more serious.
So many layers here.
First, the mother went to see the devil in the woods, and then we hear she had to think about things. The obvious thought is that the devil stole her heart, so he was perhaps the man who stole the mother, later on, "stole", but still.
It also makes you wonder what he did to the daughter.
And then you can go more metaphorical, what if going to think about things on your own, what if that is what "going to see the devil" means? Because what sort of crazy wild woman needs to go and think things through, rather than do what is right and proper? Eh?
Finally, what led to the mother leaving was something the daughter showed her.
There's this concept called "the fruitful void," something that is not explored, or stated, but everything else circles. It is the unmentioned heart of a game's design, or a work of art.
And here it is the guilt over causing her mother to leave. Even if she didn't really, that is what is hidden within this piece — "I showed her, and then she left."
And the mother, did she not fall into the river of life? Did she not let it carry her away from home and family?
P.S. Interesting that the concept of a chin as what you look out for in men repeats this week.
