It's an interesting line isn't it? I see that as the ultimate act of 'depopulating' the house, clearing it out of its residual memory. Memory itself is like a reflection of a time gone by, so painting the mirrors to hide those literal reflections could be a way to diminish or even banish memory's power. That's my take anyway! Poetry is what you make of it so much of the time :)
