What does "WOKE" mean?

It seems that the term WOKE has some meaning loosely related to "aware."

However, having heard the term used so many times, in condescending tones, to me it sounds like the word WOKE is equivalent to RETARDED.

I'm sure most democrats are woke. Are you?
