The rhetorical debates over the extremes of the spectrum of ideas is a distraction. It's easy to flaunt a pre-programmed opinion for which arguments have been provided than to think critically and come to a determination, understanding or compromise. It is easier to hit retweet, repost, etc than to actually go out and do something. We live in an age of distraction over action.

I have no awareness of the second point of your post, although I can comment that the country doesn't act as a person with a conscious, it's just too big and diverse. I hope that individual people stand up and lend a hand, because as far as I know anyone can seek asylum here, they just have to get here and do the paperwork.
